Description

An insider tip for romantics ...

The 514 metre high mountain has been attracting day trippers since the 18th century, as the famous remains of a castle and monastery can be found on its plateau. It was the Bohemian king and German emperor Charles IV who discovered the imposing mountain backdrop for himself in the middle of the 14th century and made an unmistakable mark on Oybin by building his imperial house and founding a monastery for the Cölestine order.

In the 18th/19th century, the now dilapidated and enchanted-looking walls were rediscovered by the Saxon court painter Johann Alexander Thiele. Soon after, the Romantic painters Caspar David Friedrich, Carl Gustav Carus, Carl Blechen and Ludwig Richter travelled to Oybin and made it world-famous with their works. Today, the Oybin rock with its castle and monastery is the best-known excursion destination in the Zittau Mountains and an impressive backdrop for many events. Every visitor can find their favourite spot here. The cloister, monastery church ruins, mountain cemetery and the views will undoubtedly leave an impression.
