... Arrive in the Ore Mountains

The mountain and Renaissance town of Marienberg in the heart of the Ore Mountains greets you with a hearty "Glück auf!" Rich discoveries of silver were the reason for the founding of the town in 1521 by Duke Henry the Pious. A tour of the town takes you across the large market square with the monument to the town's founder, past the town hall and numerous town houses to St Mary's Church, Saxony's youngest late Gothic hall church.

The historic centre of Marienberg and the Lauta mining landscape are among the 22 parts of the Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří mining region that have been awarded UNESCO World Heritage status. The town comprises a total of 14 districts with a rural character. Marked cycle and hiking trails lead through forests, valleys and meadows up to the heights of the Ore Mountain ridge. Discover mountain meadows and forests, marvellous views, the wild and romantic Schwarzwassertal valley between Pobershau and Kühnhaide or natural features such as the basalt fan on the Hirtstein in Satzung.

Marienberg and its districts have an astonishingly rich cultural and historical heritage, such as the mining magazine with its museum about Saxon-Bohemian history or the visitor mine with horse-drawn galley in Lauta, which conveys mining history with horsepower at weekends and on public holidays. The carving exhibition ‘Die Hütte’ and an engineering factory in the Böttcherfabrik exhibitions invite visitors to Pobershau, where the visitor mine ‘Molchner Stolln’ is also located. There are also stories to tell about a magical stone in the serpentine stone museum in the village of Zöblitz.

The combination of nature and culture makes Marienberg, in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Ore Mountains/Krušnohoří Mining Region, a worthwhile destination for holidaymakers interested in history, mining and the beauty of the Ore Mountains. The Preßnitz Valley Museum Railway Steinbach - Jöhstadt is also within easy reach of the town.
