Description
Kurort Rathen / Oberrathen
A great family fun attraction ...
Under the direction of Lothar Hanisch, the world's largest garden model railway layout has been designed and installed in Rathen, just opposite the Bastei rock formation. In order to create this fantastic model railway scenery including over 250 mostly authentic miniature houses and 300 meters (984 feet) of streams and rivers, it was necessary to move 1,500 tons of soil and over 50 tons of sandstone. Numerous Saxon models, including the Weißeritztalbahn railway, Altenberg bobsleigh, towns like Pirna and Bad Schandau, all train stations of the region, a replica of the Karl May Festival and Moritzburg Castle, are the uncrowned kings of the layout. As many as 32 model trains are running through the adorable landscape. The Eisenbahnwelten model railway complex is accessible for people with impairments and includes a Bed and Breakfast, offering nature lovers the most picturesque accommodation.
Location and directions
Location
The Railway Worlds are located in the Saxon Switzerland National Park region in the spa town of Rathen (Oberrathen district/railway station side) not far from the ferry landing stage, around 40 km south-east of Dresden. To protect the sensitive nature in the national park region and due to the optimal railway connection, we recommend travelling by S-Bahn for your visit. The neighbouring historic yaw rope ferry, powered solely by the current of the river, takes you to the other side of the Elbe from morning to night - and back again.
Travelling by bus & train
The Railway Worlds can be easily reached from Dresden by S-Bahn line S1 (KBS241.1), which stops in Kurort Rathen just a few metres away from the miniature railway. Information on train and bus times is available online from the Upper Elbe Transport Association (VVO).
Travelling by car
If you are travelling by car, we recommend taking the A17 motorway to the Pirna exit and then using the local roads via Struppen and Weißig.
