Town of Löbau
A town steeped in history situated in the midst of Upper Lusatia …
Löbau, a city surrounded by the gorgeous nature of Upper Lusatia, can look back on a history of almost 800 years. Crafts, architecture and culture have always been very important for Löbau. You will find many signs left if you visit the city. The King-Friedrich-August Tower on the Löbauer Berg mountain is Löbau's landmark. The tower made of cast iron is 28 m tall, and it is the only one of its kind in Europe. Yet, Löbau is also worth visiting - not only from above. Adore precious buildings dating from several centuries, such as the historic Town Hall or the Nikolaikirche (St. Nicholas Church), the Handelshaus (trading house) or the old pharmacy. One of the most famous buildings is the Haus Schminke by the German architect Hans Scharoun, dating from 1933. It is one of the major buildings of Classic Modernism, found in almost any encyclopedia of architecture. In addition, Löbau is a great destination for anyone who would like to spend an active vacation. The wonderful countryside of Upper Lusatia with its typical Umgebindehäuser (timber-framed houses), romantic "Heimatstuben“ (regional chambers) and innumerable historic mills offers activities to suit everyone. During your holiday, you can savour the country-style cuisine of Upper Lusatia with a glass of fresh Löbauer Bergquell draft beer.
