The Dresden suburban railways and the Saxonia Express No. RE 50 (a regional train) will take you to Saxony’s best places in a fast, comfortable and keen way. What about hiking through the Radebeul vineyards; enjoying a lush evening in Dresden’s Neustadt, a hip quarter; or relaxing in the Toskana Therme spa in Bad Schandau. You may also visit Leipzig Zoo to admire numerous fascinating and exotic animals.
Among the train passengers are not only day-trippers and tourists but also fans of historic narrow-gauge railways. Thus, by taking a Dresden S-Bahn train or RE 50 regional train, you can get off at Radebeul-Ost, Freital-Hainsberg and Oschatz stations, where the narrow-gauge railways of Lössnitzgrundbahn, Weisseritztalbahn and Döllnitzbahn, respectively, depart. In addition, you can go to Bad Schandau by suburban train to enjoy a scenic ride on the Kirnitzschtalbahn (a tramway).
The train journey from Dresden main station to Saxon Switzerland takes less than 45 minutes. Bad Schandau station (a so-called national park station) is the perfect starting point for hikes such as to Lichtenhainer Wasserfall (a waterfall), the Felsentor Kuhstall (cowshed) rocks or the hills of Kleiner and Grosser Winterberg. From Schmilka station, the S-Bahn will take you back to Dresden in the evening.
Sit back and enjoy a relaxing 90-minute train ride on the Saxonia Express from Dresden to Leipzig, running every hour from early morning to late evening. In the trade fair city of Leipzig, you are invited to explore the exciting city; for example, when dining in Auerbachs Keller (Auerbach's Cellar) – Goethe’s favorite wine bar and inspiration for his Faust legend. Or get to know Leipzig’s young, emerging art scene. You can also visit Leipzig Zoo, one of the most beautiful zoos in Germany; as well as Europe’s biggest terminal station.
